Kai Xuwicha is first officer on the Vigilant, a hunted ship crewed by
wanted men, hiding out on a space station in a far-flung asteroid
belt past Mars and beyond the reach of the law. After more than a
year on the run, the crew are making new lives for themselves,
pairing up and settling down.
All, except Kai. Haunted by a past he tries not to think about, Kai lives one day at a time and trusts no one -- no one besides Sarhaan and D'abu, that is. His two friends have found new partners, though, and life on board the stolen gunship is starting to feel like one long honeymoon cruise to Kai.
But even ex-soldiers have to make a living. Added mouths to feed make finding paying jobs the number one priority for the crew of the Vigilant. So when the Martian mining guild offers the men a fat reward to retrieve a mysterious object from a derelict ship, they can't afford to look to closely at the details... or the legality.
On board to look after the Guild's business interests is Seth Loftin, head of Doradus Station's security force and Kai's occasional 'friend with benefits.' When Nick Andrade, the man the crew holds responsible for a friend's torture, offers payment in platinum for a ride to Mars, the atmosphere on the Vigilant goes from uncomfortable to explosive.
Already on edge, Kai finds himself struggling to balance the professional and the personal. Pushed to the breaking point and unable to keep the ghosts at bay, things begin to fall apart.
